You get good views out east, north, and west, so this trail is a great way to get a perspective on the scale of the Gila Forest. It’s definitely a hard hike, mainly due to the abundance of loose rocks on the trail, but it’s a beautiful hike and I highly recommend it to anyone who would rather roll their ankles a few times, than sit on the couch all day. Left are commercial cell towers. They were very friendly, but not letting people up into the tower right now due to COVID. While there were a few spots with switchbacks to make things easier, for the most part it was a steep climb up some 2150' in two miles so we were ready for a break at the summit. The other side on the return to I-80 was not difficult at all. Hiked trail in March and was the only hiker. At the head of the ridge, the trail bends south to traverse the mountainside, before turning southeast again at 1.4 miles onto a gently sloping bench of open pine forest. All vehicles had enough ground clearance which is necessary to reaching the top. It was the first time to descend via Fordyce Lake Road, a long but easy walk. There is a great variety and they are very clear and obvious. Never saw another person. I got a couple good marks. If you are willing to brave a 2.5 climb, you will be rewarded with a nice long beautiful descent back home. There are also two small creek crossings during this mile. Short, difficult trip to 7,841-ft. mountain peak. We had a lifted Jeep on 35’s, A Tacoma with 33’s and a Tacoma with 31’s. Then the road down to Cisco was basically just a fire road with some loose rocks that could be done by most trucks with some level of clearance. Amazing views at the top!!!! We came in from cisco grove and it was a pretty easy trail up to the lookout. Before you reach the ranger station there is a single track that loops back down to the main road. I thought maybe we could go up there for snow play, but it also looked like private property. Please keep this trail safe and usable by not leaving trash or doing ruining the trail from not having the right vehicle. I would recommend 31’s at least and would air down to 25 PSI due to sharp jagged rocks near the top and also for more traction. Meeting and taking to the range at the lookout was nice. The views are absolutely incredible. The Signal Peak 4×4 Trail is a very cool, mild in summer, sketchy in winter, one-lane 4×4 Trail that traverses stunning views of Tahoe’s National Forest. The shade made it a pleasant temperature but in the summer you have to always expect some rain in the afternoons. The trail is located within the Pinos Altos Mountain Range. It felt much longer than 2.5 miles one way but our watch confirmed it was exactly that. Be careful at tippy spot at Point 2. Took over 8 hours. But worth it for the mountain views from the top. The trail was redone/fixed so now its a lot easier. There were patches of icy snow throughout, but never deep. The view at the top was awesome. It was an enjoyable enough hike with decent elevation gain at the beginning. Turn right at Fordyce Lake Road to return to Interstate 80. The root section is the most difficult. Black Peak was worth hiking to as it’s the highest in the PA range, but not much of a view. I used this hike to prep for a Grand Canyon trip given almost 1700' up and back down. If you follow the service road down a bit you will hit the trail again which follows the ridge line for a mile or two before hitting the CDT which makes for a less steep hike overall and it can be taylored to any length.
